CIRCUS
CIRCUS
Norma I. Quintana has been photographing the members of a one-ring traveling circus for the past ten years. Each season, understanding more intimately their unusual lifestyle and strong family bonds. The hauntingly beautiful black and white photographs capture the performers off stage, in contemplative or playful moments, proudly perfecting their craft. As author Cristina Garcia describes, “These are not flash frozen images, but a loving history of an extended family, another way of living in the world.”

FORGET ME NOT / No Me Olvides
FORGET ME NOT / No Me Olvides
This extensive portrait series includes subjects, from all walks of life, who live, work or travel in her town in the Napa Valley. Quintana’s compelling portraits are reminiscent of photo booth images taken in the 1940's, '50s and '60s. She has been collecting such images of her own family taken in Puerto Rico by the same photographer year after year. These portraits served to mark people and life events that form the fabric of a community.

In order to recreate the look and sentiment of these mementos, Quintana commissioned an artist to paint a 10' X 14' backdrop similar to the one in her family photographs as well as build the accompanying painted wooden column. In front of this backdrop, Norma has captured a variety of personalities from migrant workers to military officers, a local centenarian to a young ballerina.

HEART OF THE ATACAMA
HEART OF THE ATACAMA

This new series introduces landscapes into Quintana's repertoire. Quintana captured these stunning desert images just east of Chuquicamata, Chile where the Anaconda Mining company once ran the world's largest copper mine.
